NASCO Health Care Benefits Online (2002-2003)Penn State Smeal College of Business Adminisration

Client: National Account Service Company (NASCO), LLC site design, enhancement and maintenance services by the Centers for IBM e-business Innovation :: ATLANTA. NASCO supports ~10 Blue Cross Blue Shield Control Plan Payors.

Roles: Information Architecture and User Interface Design, Project management assistance.

Summary:

  • Provided overall guidance, strategic consultation and vision for the UI architecture and design, including requirements gathering/solution outline, macro and micro design, build and maintenance for a health care payor network B2B / B2C member services portal.
  • Collaborated with IBM colleagures who supported and developed APIs, messaging layer, hosting and other technical services.
  • Served as lead UI/information architect and creative resource, producing core UI/information architecture and design work products and specifications, in addition to supplementary specifications. Supervised four incremental resources in areas of information architecture, content development and media programming.
  • Assisted IBM engagement leadership with client briefings, strategic planning sessions, and cross-team leadership.
  • Designed and developed a customizable marketing sales demo (stand-along multimedia).

Summary:

  • Successfully helped close sale of 18-month relationship with Fortune 50 Consumer Packaged Goods giant.
  • Assisted with ramp-up by meeting with client constituents and 3rd party vendors to gather requirements and documentation, conducting assessments and developing approaches/plans related to six major project efforts.
  • Collaborated with IBM team/engagement leadership, conducted knowledge transfer to various team members assigned to projects.

Client: Georgia Tech Center for Rehabilitation Technology, Atlanta, GA. Contract with the U.S. Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).

Roles: User Interface Design, Information Architecture and Creative Direction. Assisting client manager with bridge between project management, user research/requirements analysis, creative design/production, database programming, and HTML/Cold Fusion ML coding.

Summary:

  • Guided overall requirements definition, information architecture and creative design
  • Designed taxonomic structures to provide access to a comprehensive library of information on assistive technology, including links to thousands of sites on assistive technology, and disability-related resources and services
  • Designed three different search dialogs to help users in problem definition and selection of appropriate assistive technology devices
  • Developed vendor interfaces that allow assistive technology vendors to enter and update product information
  • Designed online community functions to allow users to discuss ideas, problems and solutions
  • Produced promotional materials (including an interactive demo, conference exhibit booth, and print publications) and provided in-person demos at national level conferences.

Client: Georgia Tech Office of Information Technology, Educational Technologies Directorate, Atlanta, GA.

Roles: Requirements Analysis and User Research, Backend Technology Architecture Coordination, Information Architecture, HTML Coding, User Pilot Project Coordination.

Summary:

  • Surveyed and conducted analysis of similar educational institutions' implementation environment for WebCT courseware development.
  • Coordinated technology architecture and backend development to integrate existing faculty/student information systems, courseware tool, and web site.
  • Provided training and consultation to a large pilot group of faculty across a variety of schools and colleges, who tested use of courseware in their class environments. Used results of pilot test as input to campus-wide rollout.
  • Designed web site to support campus-wide rollout of courseware tool, including automated index to online courses, forms to request courses, a variety of faculty/student guides, a training calendar, and links to support resources.

Client: Georgia Tech Graphics, Visualization and Usability (GVU) Center, Atlanta, GA.

Roles: Requirements Analysis and User Research, Information Architecture, Initial User Interface Design Concepts and Refinement, Initial HTML and Cascading Style Sheet development for redesign project.

Summary:

  • Conducted user research and requirements analysis, including faculty, students, industry partners, external researchers, and other staff.
  • Produced significant information architecture for designed site, which provided expanded opportunities for Center branding/identity establishment in addition to implementation of areas to communicate research interests, Center affiliations, events information, educational program features, and research results.
  • Produced a variety of iterative design concepts, working in a team with Director (client), database programmers, other designers, and HTML coders.
  • Implemented prototype site (since adapted) with HTML and Cascading Style Sheets.

Roles: Content Research, Content Development, Initial Information Architecture (special web programming summer internship).

Summary:

  • Assisted web site producers with early phase content research from a variety of sources (Library of Congress, web and print publications, etc.).
  • Reviewed roughcut of Ken Burns film and assisted with brainstorming for initial information architecture, design concepts and interactive features.
  • Wrote early drafts of biographical and historical accounts for "Inside the Corps" and "Native Americans" sections.

Client: PBS Online, Alexandria, VA.

Roles: Content Research and Initial Information Architecture (special web programming summer internship).

Summary:

  • Assisted web site producers early phase content research by interfacing with a variety of producers and content across all media developed on the topic area by PBS and its broadcasting affiliates.
  • Produced initial information architecture, including ideas about structure, design concepts, interactive functionality, tie-ins with television programming, etc.

  • Assisted web site producers with managing integration of content and design work being accomplished by external design firm.
  • Produced optimized and adjusted graphics after site launch.

Biome Expedition (1997)Biome Expedition

Client: Brandon Elementary School, Atlanta, GA. Prototype only.

Roles: Co-Developer and Co-Evaluator (with Ivan Brusic and Sunil Shah) for prototype Web-based educational and discussion tool to support a 5th grade science class.

Summary:

  • Conducted user research (teacher, lab admin and students) to determine requirements, technology environment, learning goals, etc. Used a mixture of user surveys, curriculum/resource review, user interviews, and ethnographic observation.
  • Designed and produced scaffolded introductions to selected world biomes and example food webs, using Macromedia Shockwave™.
  • Produced a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), threaded discussion space which encouraged collaboration and discussion between student peers, the researchers and the teacher.
  • Conducted evaluations of educational effectiveness and determined possible scenarios of use in the environment.
  • Produced Design Review (PDF) and Evaluation Review (PDF).
